UNDERSTANDING THE CULTURE: SOCIAL MEDIA AND SELFIES

Indonesians are very curious. They will want to ask you a lot of questions, even if they feel too shy to talk to you.

Because they are excited to see you, Indonesians may ask to stay in contact with you through social media and/or ask to have their picture taken with you.

Social Media: Social media is very popular in Indonesia, especially among younger generations. Before you arrive, we recommend that you develop a social media strategy for your time in Indonesia. You should ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Are my social media posts and messages appropriate for friends from my home country and the people I will meet in Indonesia?
  2. Should I create secondary social media accounts to share with people I meet in Indonesia?
  3. Are there any security concerns for sharing my primary social media accounts while in Indonesia?
  4. Should I disable my primary social media accounts while in Indonesia?

Selfies and Photos: As a foreigner (or "bule"), you will stand out and attract attention. Most Indonesians enjoy taking their pictures with friends, both new and old. Do not be surprised - ok, let me rephrase - fully expect Indonesians to want to take pictures with you.

The following are some best practices for taking pictures with Indonesians you have just meet.

  1. Feel free to invite more people to get in the pictures, especially if you feel uncomfortable about having your picture taken with someone from the opposite gender.
  2. Don't be surprised if someone you do not know photobombs you when a picture is taken.
  3. Don't be surprised if someone comments on the color of your eyes or hair, the shape of your noise, or your overall appearance.
